Old Romanian | ||||
It is a rare case, when the chess clock is fading under the light of the personality, who stands behind it: a rebel for life, great Romanian hero Olah Ferdinand (1920-1985). Not willing to obey to the communist dictatorship, Olah was arrested in 1958 (at the age of 38) and sentenced for the life-time labor prison in Siberia. Being amnestied in 1964 he came back to Romania with the strong desire to flee the regime, namely to build a boat and to pass beyond the territorial waters of Romania to the Black Sea. It took Olah 12 years (1966-1978) to finish the boat, with which he dreamed of freely roaming the seas of the world, however he never got around to it. Nearly next 5 following years he was struggling to get a permission/license to roam the Black Sea, however it was constantly rejected. Furthermore, in 1983 he was forced by the communistic Securitate to sell his ship, crashing almost 20-years long dream of his life. Behind this impressive story there is a fact, that Olah was also a great chess enthusiast. He played chess for his local team in Valia Lui Mihai, won numerous amateur tournaments and manufactured such a beautiful and unique clock (presumably 1940s), that will keep the history of this brave man forever. |
